There is a specific kind of morning quiet that you only experience right before a school bell rings. For years, that quiet was my cue to take a deep breath, straighten my lanyard, and get ready to give my students everything I had. I loved being a Special Education Teacher. I loved the breakthroughs, the chaotic energy, and the quiet moments of connection.
But sometimes, life whispers a change of pace into your ear—and sometimes, it taps you on the shoulder a little harder than you’d like.
Lately, both my daughter and I have been navigating some tricky life hurdles. When your body starts demanding that you slow down, you have to listen. It became clear that to take care of my family and myself, I needed to step away from the traditional classroom. It was a bittersweet decision, but as it turns out, closing that heavy school door just meant opening a much wider, much wilder gate to our daily life at home.
Finding Joy in the Chaos
If you’ve been following our journey here or caught our antics on social media, you know our house is never actually quiet. Leaving full-time teaching has allowed me to pour my heart entirely into what we love most—tending to our rescue animals and sharing their chaotic, beautiful lives with all of you online.
Instead of grading papers, my mornings are now filled with the demanding squawks of our parrots, the enthusiastic greetings of our dogs and cat, and the steady, fascinating presence of our reptiles. There is an incredible healing power in animals. Watching a bird master a new enrichment toy or just sitting with a rescue pet does wonders for the soul, especially on days when health challenges feel heavy.
Creative Sparks and Thrift City Treasures
Slowing down has also given my daughter and me the chance to do something we haven't been able to do in a long time: create and explore together. When you’re dealing with chronic health stuff, finding a creative outlet isn't just a hobby; it’s a lifeline. The other day, we had one of those perfect, gentle mornings. We started with a trip to a treasure hunt at Thrift City.
If you’ve never spent an hour sifting through thrift store bins with a creative teenager who has an incredible eye for art, you are missing out. My daughter and I share a deep love for things with a history. As we dug through old trinket dishes and vintage frames, we started talking about the beauty of things that are reimagined, upcycled, and given a second chance at life.
A Little Piece of History, Just for You
That trip reminded me of a project we’ve been quietly pouring our hearts into. Over the last few weeks, we’ve been gathering, restoring, and curating a stunning collection of vintage and upcycled jewelry.
There is something so magical about holding a piece of history and thinking about the stories it carries. We’ve been cleaning them up, pairing them, and getting them ready for new homes. Each piece we select feels like a little token of resilience and beauty, and honestly, sharing them with you feels like extending a piece of our happy place to yours.
